JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Summary 

Join Plus One Robotics as a Systems Engineering Manager to get in on the ground floor of a tenacious startup that is developing robotic solutions for logistics and e-commerce applications. Each application for Plus One’s software solutions needs to be efficiently integrated with robotic/controls hardware and customer systems to maximize value. As a manager within our Operations team, you will be responsible for overseeing the team that is:

  • Delivering systems based on customer orders
  • Deploying pilot systems
  • Performing quick deployment assessments to evaluate the feasibility of customer applications
  • Developing demonstration systems for promotional purposes

 

Essential Functions:

Personnel Management

  • Grow your team in proportion to work volume, and in anticipation of future work
  • Recruit the right talent for the team
    • Mentor interns to keep the hiring pipeline full of potential candidates
    • Document performance improvement areas and act when needed.
    • Research/recommend contractors to build network of technical teams
  • Supervise group leads and act as lead in their absence
  • Monitor and determine various staffing and training needs
  • Set and communicate the mission, vision, and values of your team.
  • Develop, maintain, and execute team member professional development plans.
    • Review team member job performance at least annually.
  • Build team culture that is unique but still aligned with POR culture.
  • Estimate team capacity and regulate tasking to optimize productivity without degrading quality.
  • Establish cadence communication with executives and direct reports, and resolve issues that arise
  • Conduct periodic one-on-one meetings with team members.
  • Review and approve expenses.
  • Review and approve time sheets.
  • Solicit team feedback and adopt best practices.
  • Recognize team failures, track lessons learned, and avoid making mistakes twice.
  • Strategize the team's future growth, given the continuous hiring and future funding rounds

 

Technical Leadership

  • Provide technical leadership, guidance, and mentorship to team members
  • Set, prioritize, balance, communicate, and manage team tasking.
  • Review and provide feedback for team member work products.
  • Review the accuracy and efficiency of the work performed and the methods used by staff
  • Review detailed engineering plans, processes, and procedures for engineering staff to use and abide by.
  • Delegate responsibility. Resist the urge to DIY.
  • Overcommunicate clarity to the team and to upper management.
  • Communicate anticipated productivity shortfalls in advance. Communicate tradeoffs when accepting/rejecting work for the team. “Yes, we can do B if A can be postponed…”
  • Coordinate with internal teams to manage workloads.
  • Propose and oversee timelines and resources for engineering projects
  • Be proactive vs reactive.
  • Oversee resources including human resources, internal budgets, and technical equipment Propose and oversee timelines and resources for internal projects (AI, manufacturing, etc.)
  • Establish cadence communication with executives and direct reports, and resolve issues that arise
  • Create detailed engineering plans, processes, and procedures for engineering staff to use and abide by
  • Provide clear and concise instructions to engineering teams
  • Review the accuracy and efficiency of the work performed by engineering staff
  • Ensure the validity of the methods used by engineering staff
  • Making determinations for equipment, staff, and training needs
  • Coordinating work with other managers and staff
  • Escalating cross-department or high-priority issues to management
  • 25% travel to customer sites to collect data, install, or support deployed systems
  • Persist in the face of challenges and offer creative solutions to project roadblocks
  • Solving/resolving problems that prevent the completion of projects

 

Business Development

  • Help build a beautiful business while delivering on promises to stakeholders
  • Confidently represent Plus One Robotics to its customers, employees, recruits, and vendors as an automation SME.
  • Promote/communicate team successes. Design and manage team business processes and workflows.
  • Keep pulse on state of company activities that could impact the team.
  • Persist in the face of challenges and offer creative solutions to project roadblocks
  • Provide proposal inputs to the sales team.
  • Design and manage team business processes and workflows.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelors/Masters in an engineering or related field
  • Management experience (minimum 2 years required, 4 years preferred)
  • Minimum 4 years professional/technical experience required
  • Preferred knowledge of ROS, namely debugging tools, or machine vision, machine learning, motion planning, calibration
  • Preferred knowledge of robot software programming (Teach Pendant languages vs INFORM, KAREL, RAPID, UR, etc.)
  • Preferred knowledge of Controls, Electrical Engineering, electronics, PLC programming, and other schematics and control architectures
  • Awards, achievements, certifications, patents, presentations, publications, etc., preferred


Additional Eligibility Qualifications 

  • Must have reliable transportation. 
  • Must have a valid driver's license. 

Supervisory Responsibility 

This position has supervisory responsibilities. 


Work Environment 

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, cameras, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. This position will also have occasional work and exposure to robots, moving mechanical parts, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment and job sites may at times be loud.


Physical Demands 
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  The employee is regularly required to sit, talk, and hear; frequently required to use hands to finger, handle or feel, and must be able to reach with hands and arms.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.  The vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work 

Full time, 40 hours/week between M-F, 9:00am-6:00pm. 


Travel

Project-based intermittent overnight travel, up to two weeks at a time during deployment phase. International travel will require a valid passport.  

OR

25% travel to customer sites to collect data, install, or support deployed systems.


Work Authorization 

Must be able to show documentation that shows authorization to legally work in the U.S.
